Start, stop, and status

The PostgreSQL command “pg_ctl” [PgSQL PG_CTL] can be used for simple operations like starting and stopping the database or for checking the status. In productive environments, however, more convenient auto start mechanisms should be set up (also see section “Post-installation” for Red Hat Enterprise Linux [PgSQL RHEL]).
